CAKE MIX is a blog about music and culture based out of Ottawa, Canada. The focus will be to promote local talent and inform more people about various events around town. We are in no way professional critics… think of us more like that friend who always wants to bring you out to the bar down the street to see a band you’ve never heard. Maybe you’re that person too. We love those people.
Why?
If you’ve ever been to a really great show and spent the night wishing there was something more you could do to support the artist(s), you’ll understand. Maybe we can’t set up the next gig or cover the cost of producing the next record… but we can tell everyone we know to go see the next show or buy the new album when it comes out. So that’s what we’ll do.
What if I want to promote an artist/event?
Shoot us a message on tumblr (or tweet @cakemixculture) and we’ll take a look.
It’s already the last weekend of August! There are lots of events this weekend, but we’ll focus on two festivals going on around town… (check the calendar for more options)
All Weekend (starts Thursday) - Wakefest (various venues in Wakefield)
Why you should go: Music, art, dance, film, performance and more taking place along the banks of the river. Check out the events page to see the full festival schedule. Thursday’s festival opening is a “Come As You Art” fashion show, with local artists dressing models in their work, and musical entertainment by CLEAR.
On Friday, check out some really neat art by Stefan Thompson at the Mckenzie Marcotte Gallerie and then some live music at the Black Sheep Inn with Matt Ouimet and friends.
Saturday night’s music is Bruce Peninsula and Shannon Ross at the Black Sheep Inn, and the festival wraps up on Sunday with the “Musical Muse” event.
August 25 & 26 (Saturday and Sunday) - Capital Pride (stages near City Hall)
Why you should go: There have been a number of events this week as part of the Capital Pride celebration, and it wraps up this weekend with some excellent live performances. Check out the full lineup here. Saturday’s Alternative Stage hosts indie/electro-pop group Fevers, local folk group Jack Pine and the Fire and many more. There’s an after party event with The Peptides at the Mercury Lounge. On Sunday’s Main Stage, check out Young Empires, Pandaléon and more.
