CAKE MIX is a blog about music and culture based out of Ottawa, Canada. The focus will be to promote local talent and inform more people about various events around town. We are in no way professional critics… think of us more like that friend who always wants to bring you out to the bar down the street to see a band you’ve never heard. Maybe you’re that person too. We love those people.
Why?
If you’ve ever been to a really great show and spent the night wishing there was something more you could do to support the artist(s), you’ll understand. Maybe we can’t set up the next gig or cover the cost of producing the next record… but we can tell everyone we know to go see the next show or buy the new album when it comes out. So that’s what we’ll do.
What if I want to promote an artist/event?
Shoot us a message on tumblr (or tweet @cakemixculture) and we’ll take a look.
Here are a few events to check out this weekend… Take a look at the calendar for more upcoming events.
August 16 (Thursday) - Amos the Transparent, Battle Mountain Band, Ben Caplan @ Zaphod’s (27 York St.)
8:00pm, $7
Why you should go: Ben Caplan is a folky musician from Halifax. He’s got a rough voice (in a good way) and a “gypsy” inspired sound. Battle Mountain is a rock band based in Toronto/Montreal. Amos is a local alt-rock band and one of our favourites these days.
August 17 (Friday) - Finding Chuck @ The Avant Garde Bar (135 1/2 Besserer St.)
8:00pm
Why you should go: Finding Chuck is an alt-rock band based in Ottawa. This group is relatively new (officially started last year), but they know how to put on a good show.
August 17 (Friday) - Brighter Brightest (and guests) @ Café Dekcuf (221 Rideau St.)
8:00pm, $12 (all-ages)
Why you should go: Another option for Friday night is Brighter Brightest, a pop/rock band based in Toronto. A new album of catchy pop songs was released last week, so they’ll be playing some of their new tunes at this show.
August 19 (Sunday) - Evening Hymns CD Release @ Raw Sugar Café (692 Somerset St. W)
8:00pm, $10
Why you should go: Evening Hymns is an indie-folk group based in Toronto. You can listen to one of the new songs on their site, or preview the album here (limited time). It sounds like it’ll be a really nice way to spend Sunday night.
