CAKE MIX is a blog about music and culture based out of Ottawa, Canada. The focus will be to promote local talent and inform more people about various events around town. We are in no way professional critics… think of us more like that friend who always wants to bring you out to the bar down the street to see a band you’ve never heard. Maybe you’re that person too. We love those people.
Why?
If you’ve ever been to a really great show and spent the night wishing there was something more you could do to support the artist(s), you’ll understand. Maybe we can’t set up the next gig or cover the cost of producing the next record… but we can tell everyone we know to go see the next show or buy the new album when it comes out. So that’s what we’ll do.
What if I want to promote an artist/event?
Shoot us a message on tumblr (or tweet @cakemixculture) and we’ll take a look.
Hopefully you all got a chance to check out Bluesfest last week. We certainly saw some great performances! This week is back to local bars and music venues. Here are our recommendations…
Monday
Marc Nelson @ The Royal Oak - Kent (180 Kent St.)
5:00pm-9:00pm
Why you should go: Marc is a folky musician based in Aylmer. His sound should be just right for a chill Monday night at the Oak. Grab some friends and a drink and relax.
Tuesday
Fire Next Time and The Zilis @ The Rainbow Bistro (76 Murray St.)
9:00pm
Why you should go: Fire Next Time have a sound best described as punk rock mixed with a little bit of folk. The Zilis are classified as rock and roll, though their sound seems to vary from song to song… Sometimes more folky, sometimes a little bluesy or alt-rocky. Whatever you call it, this show should be a good time.
Wednesday
Library Voices @ The Black Sheep Inn (Wakefield)
8:30, $12
Why you should go: Library Voices is an indie/pop/rock group based in Regina. They have a fun, feel-good vibe and compare their sound to ”drunk kids talking too openly and too honestly.” (here) It should be worth the adventure out to Wakefield.
Thursday
Music Maul CD Release Party @ The Elmdale House Tavern (1084 Wellington St West)
9:00pm, $10
Why you should go: This band from Kingston has a folky-pop sort of sound. With the band celebrating the release of their latest album (out on Tuesday), it should be a good time. Check out a preview of their cd on their site.
Friday
Corey Isenor and Winchester Warm @ Raw Sugar Cafe (692 Somerset West)
9:00pm, $12
Why you should go: Corey is a folk musician from Nova Scotia and Winchester Warm is a folk group from Ottawa. These musicians at a venue like Raw Sugar should be an excellent, relaxed Friday night.
Saturday
ZaphodsFestaMusica with Amos the Transparent, Sound of Lions, Fevers and Capitol Beat @ GranFondoOttawa event (515 Leggett Drive)
1:00pm - 9:00pm, free, all-ages
Why you should go: The real question here is why wouldn’t you go? If you’re in Ottawa and you like music (especially good, live, free music), this event is for you. Amos is a local alt-rock band and one of our favourites. They’re joined by local electro/indie bands Fevers and Sound of Lions and the soul/funk group Capitol Beat.
Sunday
KASHKA @ Raw Sugar Cafe (692 Somerset West)
9:00pm, $10
Why you should go: KASHKA is the project of Kat Burns from Forest City Lovers and James Bunton from Ohbijou. Lots of synths and echoed vocals. It’ll be interesting to see how it’s performed live.
Another weekend option… check out Mayofest in Mayo, Quebec. Camping, swimming, live music, food, etc. If you’re looking to get out of town, this looks like a fun time.
